Why I Became a Social Worker

Written by social worker: Ashley B.

Two different race hands grabbing for each other past the wrist

I could probably give you 50 reasons as to why I became a social worker.

I could tell you that in one of the most horrific, traumatic, and trying times of my life, I was met with a team of social workers who pulled me up and out of the mud and breathed life back into me.

I could share how every social worker I have personally worked with has added value to my life, even when I didn’t realize it at the time.

I can talk about the endless hours social workers have dedicated just to help me reach one goal I had set for myself.

I could share about how I spent years trying to help others overcome their barriers because I, deep down, have been a social worker at heart long before I ever started my education.

The reality is, when you are good at something, or you have a calling to act on reoccurring themes in your life - don’t ignore it. I am a social worker because despite the bad and horrible things we go through in this human experience, I still see the good. I still believe in the power of change and have witnessed so many beautiful people overcome their struggles with the help of a social worker.

Social workers are everywhere. Child welfare, therapy, politics, law enforcement, schools, hospitals - places no one would even think of, they are there. There are unlimited opportunities in this field. So, why wouldn’t I become a social worker?
